If you have a fixed static ip address on your network create a rule on your mother's router only to allow a connection from your IP. Only turn on the VNC server as and when it is needed. My advice if running the VNC server is set a REALLY STRONG password. This is beyond the scope of this thread and is a new topic in itself. SSH can create a secure tunnel in which to run the vnc connection. If you are to run it really securily you need to learn about some slightly more advanced technology known as SSH. Running a vnc server in the manner described in this thread is not very secure. I have found OSXvnc to be more stable and has more functionality. OSXvnc server instead of the mac's built in vnc server. Then you can goto you mother's mac and change its network setings to manual and then you can assign the following.įor a standard vnc server you need to make an outbound rule of tcp port 5900 to your mum's macs ip address of 192.168.0.2. So if it set to a pool of 1 to 255 you can change it to 50 to 255. The first thing you want to do is change the dhcp pool of addresses to start from 50. Once you log in to the router you can see all the menu's. The other issue you may have is that your mum's broadband connection may not have a static ip address. The default username is always admin and the password is Netgear router's usually have a default ip of A netgear router is controlled by using it's IP address in a webbrowser.
